Stock bank checks can do the job quite nicely on their own. That’s what I always told folks who kept encouraging me to order my own set of custom-designed bank drafts. Eventually, though, I saw the folly in that and now order a fresh batch almost every month.

Why bother with a personalized check? Let me count the ways.

1. Ugly, bland and generally boring bank checks cost pretty much the same as a personalized check from an online printer. You don’t save any money when you go with the inferior product, so why do it?

2. Instead of requiring you to waste time transacting with the bank for a set, you can order personal checks online at any ungodly hour and have them delivered to your home. There’s no hurry and no hassle, with everything done at your convenience.

3. Since ordering a set bearing your company’s likeness doesn’t cost much more than regular bank checks, it’s essentially free marketing you’re not taking advantage of. What serious business would waste an opportunity like that?

4. It’s a great way to get your kids interested in personal finance. It’s difficult enough to get kids to do their homework, let alone pay even an iota of attention to financial matters. A personalized check with their favorite designs emblazoned across the sheets might just make it entertaining for them.

I remember when I issued a photo check to pay my aunt for a loan. The check had a colorful picture of me, my wife and our three kids on the background. She called me up and told me she didn’t want to encash the check because the picture of us looked so good. I told her I’d send her a batch of checks in her name using the same design. She loved it.

Designer checks can make memorable gifts. As long as you keep it personal and meaningful to the receiver, there’s no doubt they’re going to appreciate it.

Graduation gifts. For new graduates, how about starting them on the road financial independence with checks that depict money? Also popular as gifts for young adults are checks with cars, music and sports themes. How about ordering a batch to make their entry into the workforce a cheerful one?

Seasonal gifts. Christmas and birthdays are great occasions to give personalized checks as gifts. If you have a good idea of what your recipient likes, such as comic books, pets or movies, you should be able to order a batch with exactly the kind of designs they will appreciate.

Special gifts. You can turn personal checks that you lend out as gifts as endearing as you want to be them to be. My wife, for instance, loves inspirational books so I designed a batch of personal checks online with each draft containing one of her favorite quotes. It was a little more expensive than usual but my wife’s joy made it all worth it.
